Entries are now open on BowlsHub Aotearoa for the 2023 Summerset Nationals.
The Summerset National Singles and Pairs will be hosted by North Harbour/Auckland and the Summerset National Fours and Mixed Pairs will return to Central Otago.
A minor change has been made to the Conditions of Play (click here to download) for the 2023 events, with every game now having a three hour time limit, excepting the QF, SF and final which will have no time limit.
The playing format of the Open Singles, Pairs and Fours will remain the same as they were in 2022.
The format of the Mixed Pairs has been adjusted; section play in 2021 took place in three 16 end games played over one day.
This year section play has been extended to six 12 end games that will be played over two days, with four wins required to qualify.
12 end games also ensure that four games of post section can be played in one day without the risk of having to complete a game in the dark, as happened the last time this event was held.
Excitingly, Bowls New Zealand has also established an Open Disability category to sit alongside the Open Men’s and Open Women’s disciplines.
The Open Disability category will replace the B1-B4 and B5-B8 categories played at the 2021 Summerset Nationals in Christchurch; these two categories will continue to be supported with their own Nationals, as part of the Bowls New Zealand Summer of Bowls calendar.
The Open Disability category will be an open gender field providing anyone with a disability that affects their bowling with the opportunity to enter.
Entrants will be asked to identify their disability from a list of qualifying criteria which will include vision, hearing, physical (including those that use a bowling arm) or intellectual impairment.
Bowls is a sport for all New Zealanders and it is hoped that the establishment of this new ‘Open Disability’ category will enable even more participation.

The Open Disability Singles event will take place from 2nd to 5th January, whilst the Pairs event will take place from the 6th to 9th January and will be open to any combination of bowlers with a disability.
