Women’s bowling earns fourth in season-opening tournament

FORT ATKINSON, Wis. — Augustana women’s bowling traveled north for their first tournament of the 2022 season on Saturday at the Warhawk Classic hosted by UW-Whitewater, placing fourth out of eight teams.

Augustana brought seven bowlers to the tournament held at Rock River Lanes this past weekend as the two-day stay gave them an early-season matchup against several CCIW opponents. The Vikings placed ahead of three of the five conference teams in attendance, ending their stay ahead of Elmhurst, North Central, and Carroll.

The Vikings showed marked improvement through their traditional matches over the weekend; tallying scores of 874, 883, and 896. The overall average team score in the traditional format for Augie was 45 pins above last season’s average.

Madelyn Lathrop placed fifth in the Classic and earned all-tournament honors. Lathrop anchored the team throughout the weekend, recording a game-high of 216 and averaging 188.6 for the Vikings. Lathrop rolled two games over 200, joining teammate Samantha Novak who had scores of 206 and 202.

Sarah Stevanovic brought home Augie’s second-best finish of the tournament, placing 14th and averaging a score of 174.8. Placing third was Delaney Walsh, who averaged 169 and rolled a high of 186 over the weekend. Walsh was consistent when faced with spare attempts, converting several of them across the Classic. Megan Kukulka subbed in for the Vikings at the Classic, rolling scores of 171 and 173, respectively.

Baker format was consistent with where the Vikings finished last season, with scores ranging from 789-851. Cami Flores showed prowess on spares through the Baker matches, coming off the bench and cleaning up crucial frames for the Vikings.

It was a solid effort to start the year,” said head coach Marty Resner. “There’s a lot to be proud of and learn from as we grow and improve.”

The Vikings will travel to Cedar Rapids on October 29-30 for the 5 Seasons Classic hosted by Mount Mercy.
