Vikings break season win record at competitive Flyer Classic

LOCKPORT, Ill. – The Augustana women’s bowling team traveled to the Strike N Spare II bowling alley February 10-12 for the Lewis Flyers’ three-day Flyer Classic. The Vikings finished 15th out of 20 programs, which included eight CCIW teams. The Vikings picked up five wins over the weekend, bringing their season total to 27, the most in a season in program history.

The Vikings began in Baker format on Friday, losing their first two games to Elmhurst and Valparaiso before winning three straight against Kentucky Wesleyan, Dominican, and Illinois Wesleyan. Augie tossed their lone clean game of the weekend with a 208 pinfall in the first match against the Bluejays. They also raised their Baker season average with high rolls of 203, 208, and 213. Samantha Olson’s 914 pinfall helped the Vikings fill frames on day one, dropping an average of 182 pins in the non-traditional format. Rose Klinger was second on the team with 850 pins in Baker, aiding Augie’s pinfall bonus opportunities in the 10th frame.

Sarah Stevanovic and Maddie Lathrop shined in Saturday’s traditional format, tossing respective totals of 918 and 910 across five matches. Stevanovic’s 211 in the opening match against top-ranked McKendree kept the game close as the Vikings led the Bearcats through seven frames. Augie’s season-high pinfall in traditional format occurred against the No. 20 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks when they dropped 939 pins. Lathrop rolled a high of 220 in the match, her second-best mark of the season. Notably, Samantha Novak rolled a season-high 213 in Augie’s match against host program Lewis.

The Vikings will compete in the Hawk Invite in Quincy, Ill., from February 24-26, before going to Addison, Ill. March 4-5 for their second CCIW tournament of the season. The action from Casino Lanes will be streamed here.
