Lincoln, Neb. – After five games of baker match play, the Nebraska bowling team went 2-3 on day one and currently sit in first place at the 2023 Big Red Invitational with a total pinfall of 5,368 and an average of 214.7.
The Big Red started the day off with a strong win against Upper Iowa (1,165-1,015), the highest scoring match of the day. NU then fell to No. 20 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1,042-987) and No. 21 Lincoln Memorial (1,086-1,048). NU then grabbed one more victory against No. 17 University of Central Missouri (1,103-947) before a close loss to No. 4 Arkansas State (1,087-1,065).
The Huskers will resume play tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. (CT) in a traditional match against Quincy, followed by matches against No. 13 Newman, No. 7 Youngstown State and Valparaiso. The fifth match of Saturday will consist of a position round according to the seeding of total pinfall.
The championship trophy of the Big Red Invitational is awarded to the team with the highest overall total pinfall and per-game average over all three days of competition. On Sunday, each team will compete in two matches of best 4-of-7 baker games in seeded pool rounds based on total pinfall and the top three teams with highest averages will be awarded.
