A-State Bowling Advances to Semifinal of Southland Bowling League Championship


ROWLETT, Texas (3/24/23) – Defeating Tulane and Stephen F. Austin in matches Friday at the Southland Bowling League Championship, the Arkansas State women’s bowling team advances to the semifinal to meet Sam Houston on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

A-State (76-29) faced seventh-seeded Tulane in the opener and came away with a 2-0 victory in the mega-match. The Red Wolves handled business in the traditional match with a total pinfall of 1,009-906 advantage. Emma Stull paced A-State with a game-high 233 while Faith Welch (217), Sarah Sanes (213) and Brooklyn Buchanan (200) added 200 or better totals.

In the Baker total pinfall portion of the mega-match, A-State got off to a 60-pin advantage and escaped with a 10-pin victory, 931-921. The Red Wolves took games one (212-197) and two (216-171) to lead by 60, but Tulane took games three (196-174) and four (178-151) to trail by just 11 pins entering the final game. A split in the 10th frame by Tulane proved to be the difference as the Red Wolves lost by one pin, 179-178, in game five to clinch the match with the 10-pin Baker advantage.

In the afternoon contest, A-State took a 1-0 lead by edging Stephen F. Austin 1,007-985. The Red Wolves posted strikes in 13 of 15 rolls in the 10th frame to take the victory. Welch led A-State with a game of 225 while Maggie Thoma (203) and Karli VanDuinen (200) also record games of 200 or better. Stephen F. Austin forced a Baker best-of-seven series winning all five head-to-head games for a pinfall advantage of 1,029-854.

After dropping game one of the series 223-204, the Red Wolves evened it up with a 223-211 advantage in game two. Stephen F. Austin took game three by eight pins (193-185), but A-State took the next four games to win the series and clinch the match. The Red Wolves took game four (204-151), game five (191-176) and game six (233-156).

A-State and Sam Houston meet in the semifinal match at 1:30 p.m. with the match streamed live via YouTube on InsideBowling. The double-elimination bracket begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with Vanderbilt taking on Youngstown State and Louisiana Tech taking on Stephen F. Austin in elimination matches.
