AQ Bowling Stands Out at Midwest Collegiate Championships

RESULTS

Wauwatosa, Wis. — The Aquinas bowling teams competed this weekend (Oct. 7-8) in a Tier 1 competition at the Midwest Collegiate Championships in Wisconsin. The men finished 15th out of 47 teams — the best result ever for the program in a Tier 1 event — while the women took 29th out of 35 teams.

AQ freshman Anthony Deluccia made history by joining The 300 Club. Deluccia bowled 12 strikes in a row to secure the second-ever recorded perfect game in the history of Aquinas men’s bowling.

The team final scores were determined by six individual series of games and 16 sets of baker games.

MEN

The Saints knocked down 9,104 total pins to place 15th out of 47 teams. Webber International won the seeding portion of the event with 9,877 pins followed by St. Ambrose (9,809) and Concordia (9,782). But, St. Ambrose went on to the win eight-team bracket to be crown the tournament team champions.

While Abery Thomas III was AQ’s best placed finisher in 28th with 1,261 pins, it was Deluccia who finished five pins behind him who accomplished the hardest feat in the sport.

After bowling individual games of 186, 214, 182 and 219, Deluccia turned heads by rolling a perfect 300 in his fifth individual game. It was the only 300 scored at the event.

Deluccia joins Ryan Lovett as the only two Saints to bowl perfect games in the program’s history. Lovett rolled his 300 on Dec. 2, 2017, in the third WHAC Jamboree tournament held at Fairlanes (now called Station 300) in Grandville, Mich.

With Michael Deming placing 42nd, three AQ bowlers finished inside the Top 45 individually among 350 competitors.

Here is how everyone performed individually:

In the 16 baker games, AQ averaged 195 pins per game. Baker Game No. 12 was the team’s best performance with 228 pins.

WOMEN

The Saints racked up 7,580 total pins for a 29th place out of 35 teams. Webber International won the seeding portion of the tournament with 9,072 pins, ahead of Mount Mercy (8,716) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (8,682). In bracket-style play, Wisconsin-Whitewater beat Webber International in the title match to win the team tournament champions.

The Saints used eight different bowlers. None of them completed all six individual games, thus hindering their overall placing based on total pins.
