A-State Bowling Advances to Semifinal of Conference USA Championship


HARAHAN, La. (3/22/24) – Defeating Stephen F. Austin and Youngstown State Friday at the Conference USA Championship, the Arkansas State women’s bowling team advances to the semifinal to meet Jacksonville State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

A-State (82-24) grabbed a 1-0 lead against SFA with a traditional pinfall edge of 1,079-1,041 in the opener Friday morning. Malaya Chavez paced the Red Wolves rolling 233 pins while Saralyne Nassberg downed 231. Karli VanDuinen added 224, Brooklyn Buchanan put down 211 and Emma Stull totaled 180.

The Red Wolves took an early 79-pin advantage in the Baker 5-game total pinfall portion of the mega-match, but SFA erased the deficit to lead by seven pins heading into the final game. After the 2691-90 advantage in game one, SFA posted margins of 193-159, 207-188 and 247-214 to build the seven-pin lead. SFA evened the mega-match by a total of 1,047-1,029 to set up the Baker best-of-seven to determine the winner.

A-State clinched the match winning four of the five games in the Baker best-of-seven. The Red Wolves took game one by four pins, 237-233, before SFA evened the tally at 1-1 with a 229-162 edge in game two. A-State posted back-to-back games of 234 to lead 3-1 and secured the match with a 236-212 margin in game five.

In the afternoon match against No. 3 Youngstown State, A-State took an early lead winning the traditional match by 22 pins, 962-940. Maggie Thoma carried the Red Wolves with a game of 266 while VanDuinen added 182, Nassberg 177, Buchanan 174 and Stull 163.

The Red Wolves won all five Baker games in the total pinfall to clinch the match 2-0. A-State opened with a 254-234 advantage and gradually built the lead with games of 222-184, 237-236 and 195-188 to lead by 66 pins entering game five. A-State put the match away winning game five 188-168.

A-State and No. 1 Jacksonville State meet in the semifinal match at 2:30 p.m. with the match streamed live on ESPN+. The double-elimination bracket begins Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with Youngstown State taking on Sam Houston and Vanderbilt taking on Louisiana Tech in elimination matches.
