GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Incoming Vanderbilt freshmen Victoria Varano and Alyssa Ballard got off to strong starts at the 2022 Junior Gold U18 Championship Monday.
Varano, who last month represented Junior Team USA at the World Championship, found herself in 20th place in the field of 569 hopefuls after averaging 203.5 over the first four qualifying games. Varano posted games of 233-194-185 and 202.
Ballard, of Keller, Texas, was right behind in 26th place with an average of 201.5 after steady games of 211-199-196 and 200.
The massive field requires that multiple bowling centers are being used in several Michigan cities, therefore at this point it is difficult to get a true head-to-head score comparison until all the qualifying games are complete.
Jillian Martin of Stow, Ohio, was leading after the first day.
