Huskers Secure Spot in Regional Championship


Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Nebraska bowling team dominated its first day of the 2023 NCAA Regional Tournament with a 2-0 record to advance to the regional championship finals. The Huskers defeated Mercyhurst and Duquesne to claim the spot in tomorrow’s finals for a chance to return to the National Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. 

The Huskers came out strong, starting the day with their first mega-match against Mercyhurst winning 2-0. In the traditional-style match, Anna Callan led the team with a dominant score of 258. Crystal Elliott, followed close behind with 235 and Kendyl Hofmeister (204), Jillian Martin (182) and Kayla Verstraete (170) rounded out the team with a total winning score of (1,049-914). In the baker-style match, NU used scores of 190, 205, 192, 201 and 225 to win and advance in the winner’s bracket to face regional host Duquesne.  

In Nebraska’s second mega-match of the day, the Huskers came out swinging again with a win (1,040-882) in the traditional format. Senior Crystal Elliott led the Huskers with 227. Anna Callan and Kendyl Hofmeister followed closely behind with Callan at 214 and Hofmeister at 213. Kayla Verstraete provided a 206, and Jillian Martin shot 180. With the win, the Huskers moved into the baker match and battled through every game against the Dukes. NU used games of 188, 176, 195, 152 and 228 to claim the overall match win. 

The Big Red returns to the lanes tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT for the Regional Championship match, where the winner will advance to the 2023 NCAA Bowling Championships.
