A-State Wins Penguin Classic to Open 2023-24 Season


STRUTHERS, Ohio (10/15/23) – The Arkansas State women’s bowling team defeated host Youngstown State 4-0 in a Baker best-of-seven championship match to win the Penguin Classic.

A-State (10-3) was 2-1 in three Baker matches to finish qualifying and had the top pinfall total with 13,175 pins in 12 head-to-head matches of the Penguin Classic. The Red Wolves met Youngstown State for the tournament title and swept the Penguins with margins of 225-193, 198-195, 218-205 and 175-165 to clinch the season-opening crown.

Opening the day against Youngstown State in a standard Baker five-game total pinfall match, the Red Wolves edged the hosts 1,096-987. A-State followed with a 980-904 tally against Central Missouri before dropping its final qualifying Baker match 1,058-996 against Nebraska.

Ranked No. 2 in the NTCA Preseason Poll, A-State closes the season opener with a 10-3 head-to-head record including 5-2 against top-25 foes. It is the first regular-season tournament title for A-State since the 2022 Lady Techsters Classic (Feb. 11-13).

A-State continues the fall portion of its schedule Oct. 27-29 at the Sunshine State Classic in Orlando, Fla.
