LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Vanderbilt freshman Hayley Lindley’s 19th-place finish led a contingent of five Commodore hopefuls after the first day of the USBC Team USA Trials at the Gold Coast Bowling Center Wednesday.
Lindley averaged 215.5 for a six-game pin total of 1,293 and trailed first day leader Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, whose 1,455 pin count equaled an average of 242.
All five Vanderbilt bowlers fared well in this elite field where professional stars and former NCAA All-Americans found themselves well down the leaderboard.
Vandy’s Alyssa Ballard was right behind Lindley in 23rd position (1,282) while Victoria Varano (1,252) and Caroline Thesier (1,250) were in 42nd and 43rd, respectively. Kaylee Hitt was 100th in the field of 153 with a 190 average.
The standings over the five-day tournament are determined by the daily placings. Bowlers carry over their daily position (as opposed to pin counts) and the leaderboard becomes the bowlers with the fewest tallies. This system rewards consistency as opposed to one-day hot streaks. The bowlers are competing for positions on Team USA, Junior Team USA and in the case of the amateurs, United States Amateur champion.
The event will be livestreamed on BowlTV and results will be posted online.
