BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Alabama State University claimed the Southwestern Athletic Conference Academic Achievement Award while also leading the league with the highest percentage of student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
This is the fifth straight SWAC Academic Acheivement Award under the guidance of ASU Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief Dr. Genese Lavalais. This is also the eighth time overall that Lavalais’ led institutions have won the Academic Acheivement Award.
“Our student-athletes continue to amaze and shine a bright light on Alabama State University and Athletics,” said Dr. Genese Lavalais, Senior Associate Athletic Director & Chief of Staff/SWA. “They always rise to the challenge each semester and I am so proud them! I would like to express my gratitude to the faculty, support staff, and coaches for consistently holding our students to a high standard of excellence and instilling a Dominate mindset.”
Alabama State (69 percent) claimed the All-Academic Achievement Award which is presented annually to the athletic program that has the highest percentage of student-athletes that earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better during the academic year. Bethune-Cookman (67 percent) finished second, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff (64 percent) finished in third place overall.
“This award demonstrates the constancy and dedication that our student-athletes have to perform at high level on the academic side.” Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Jason Cable said. “Our student-athletes continue to navigate each challenging semester with discipline and dedication. To say I am extremely proud of our student-athletes success in the classroom is an understatement.”
Alabama State had 249 student-athletes listed on the SWAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which s comprised of student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters.
The SWAC Academic Success Award is an award decided based upon each member institutions collective ranking in the categories of highest four-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) average, highest single year APR average, and highest Graduate Success Rate (GSR).
