LINCOLN, Neb. (3/4/23) – After going 5-0 in Baker matches, the Arkansas State women’s bowling team went 4-1 in traditional matches and stands second among 10 team field with 10,733 total pins entering bracket play Sunday.
For the third consecutive event, an A-State bowler was the top individual. True-freshman Maggie Thoma led the field with 1,157 pinfall for an average of 231.40. Thoma had a high of 279 in the opener and totaled over 210 pins in each match Saturday. Karli VanDuinen was ninth individually with 1,111 pins (222.20) and Brooklyn Buchanan was 16th with 1,079 (215.80). Faith Welch totaled 1,037 pins (207.40) to rank 24th and Sarah Sanes rolled 1,032 (206.40) to rank 25th.
A-State (61-27) opened the day against seventh-ranked Youngstown State and topped the Penguins 1,155-1,040 to move to 6-0 in the event. A 100-pin margin against Upper Iowa, 1,076-976, gave the Red Wolves another victory, but A-State came up short in the third match of the day by 10 pins against Lincoln Memorial, 1,000-990. The Red Wolves closed out the day with wins over Newman (1,123-1,049) and Valparaiso (1,072-1,041).
The Red Wolves are second in pinfall with 10,733 pins for an average of 214.7. Host Nebraska leads with 10,843 pins (216.9) while Newman is third with 10,475 pins (209.5).
A-State faces Quincy in the first position round of Baker best-of-seven bracket matchup and will follow with a match against Nebraska. The Big Red Invite team title will be awarded to the team with the most total pinfall at the conclusion of the second position round Sunday.
