NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt student athletes Mabel Cummins and Max Beck have been named the school’s nominees for the Southeastern Conference H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Cummins led the Commodore bowling team to its third national championship this spring, while Beck is a runner for the men’s cross country program. The SEC will announce the overall winners from among the school nominees on May 2.
One female and one male student-athlete from each institution were nominated for the SEC Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. The two winners, who will receive a $20,000 postgraduate scholarship, will be selected by the Faculty Athletics Representative Selection Committee. Twenty-six additional $10,000 SEC Postgraduate Scholarships will be given to the athletes not selected for the overall award. The winners of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year award will be honored during the SEC’s annual spring meeting.
Beck is double majoring in biochemistry and chemical biology and minoring in medicine, health, and society. He has a 3.962 grade-point average, and he has been named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll on three occasions and the Dean’s List six times. During the 2022 cross country season, he competed in four of five meets, including the SEC championships, where the men’s team recorded a top-10 finish. Beck was awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the NCAA in March. At the Golden Dores, he was named the recipient of the Dr. Jerry Reves Award for having the highest GPA among all Commodore student-athletes. After the completion of his Vanderbilt degree, Beck plans to attend Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, with the goal of becoming a physician investigator.
Cummins, a neuroscience major with a 3.496 GPA, is a five-time Dean’s List member and a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient. She was named the 2022-23 NTCA/NCAA Player of the Year and the 2022–23 Southland Bowling League Bowler of the Year while helping Vanderbilt capture its third national title. Additionally, this season, Cummins was selected a First-Team All-American and earned a spot on the NTCA All-Central Region team.
