RALEIGH, N.C. — For the ninth consecutive season, the Bowie State women’s bowling team are crowned the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division title after going 10-2 at the CIAA Event III and regular season finale at the Stars and Strikes Entertainment Center.
Bowie State concluded the regular season 43-5 overall and in the CIAA while posting a 33-5 mark in the Northern Division under the leadership of Andrew Campbell.
How it Happened
The Bulldogs almost had a perfect day during the opening frame, winning four-straight that included victories against Elizabeth City State twice (910-542 and 811-520), Virginia Union (869-801), Virginia State (808-618) but fell short 859-749 against the Lady Panthers in the last game. Four Bulldogs rolled a 200-game or more featuring Kamryn Smith who spun a 209 and 222 in games one and two, while Olivia Watts rolled the highest on the day with a 224-game against Virginia State. TaVera Johnson earned a 206-game against VUU and Chalia Gray registered a 203-game against ECSU. Johnson would lead the day with 885 total pinfalls.
Bowie State cruised through day two with limited hiccups, including a 298 advantage over Virginia State – its biggest point spread on the day. The Bulldogs had three bowlers roll a 200-game in the first game of the day against Virginia Union led by 209 from both Gray and Jessica Watts.
Day 3 and the Baker’s round featured a 2-1 mark for BSU, the Bulldogs would defeat Elizabeth City State, 762-589 and Virginia State 761-571 but fall short 773-716 to VUU. The Lady Panthers were the lone team in the division to pick up win’s this season over Bowie State.
Looking Ahead
Bowie State will set eyes on the 2024 CIAA Championship which is slated to take place on Mar. 22-24 in Salem, Va at Lee-Hi Lanes. The Bulldogs finished as runner-ups a season ago, falling to Fayetteville State. BSU has won seven of the last 10 conference championships, including six-straight from 2015-2022.
