Red Wolves Lead at Penguin Classic Entering Sunday


STRUTHERS, Ohio (10/14/23) – The Arkansas State women’s bowling team totaled 4,928 pins in traditional play Saturday at the Penguin Classic and leads the 13-team field heading into the final day of competition Sunday.

A-State (7-2) has a two-day total of 10,103 pins to lead host Youngstown State by one pin. Nebraska (9,767, Niagara (9,522), Valparaiso (9,478), Duquesne (9,453), Mercyhurst (9,322), Central Missouri (9,320), Lewis (9,234) and Morgan State (9,023) complete the top-10 teams.

A-State (7-2) opened the day with a 910-847 win over Bryant, but suffered back-to-back losses to Mercyhurst (1032-1013) and Duquesne (1030-1019). The Red Wolves responded with wins over Valparaiso (1008-925) and Niagara (978-887) to close out the day.

Karli VanDuinen led the Red Wolves individually with 1,004 pins and ranked 11th among the field of 89 bowlers Saturday. She rolled three games above 200, including a high of 228 against Duquesne. Faith Welch had the high game of the day for A-State with a pinfall of 240 in the matchup with Duquense. Emma Stull (995), Faith Welch (988), Saralyne Nassberg (982), Malaya Chavez (583) and Maggie Thoma (376) bowled Saturday.

The Red Wolves meet Youngstown State, Central Missouri and Nebraska in Baker matches Sunday to complete qualifying. Teams will be ranked 1-13 and a Baker best-of-seven series will determine the champion and final standings.
