ARLINGTON, Texas (1/28/24) – Picking up seven wins over top 10 opponents, the sixth-ranked Arkansas State women’s bowling team finished second among 12 teams at the Prairie View Invitational.
A-State (52-12) qualified third among 12 teams following a 1,114-1,072 traditional victory Sunday over No. 1 Jacksonville State. The Red Wolves met No. 3 Youngstown State in the semifinal and earned a 4-3 victory to advance to the final against Jacksonville State. A-State was downed 4-0 in the final to finish second.
It took seven games, but the Red Wolves prevailed against Youngstown State 4-3. The two teams traded wins over the seven games and A-State edged the Penguins 194-183 in the decisive game. Jacksonville State got off to a quick start against A-State with the front nine in game one on way to a 284-152 advantage. Jacksonville State took game two (183-179), game three (198-190) and game four (234-203) to clinch the victory.
In the final qualifying match to open the day Sunday, A-State topped Jacksonville State 1,114-1,072. It marked the 27th win of the season against a ranked opponent, second of the season against the top-ranked team. Maggie Thoma totaled 279 in the match while Faith Welch added 247 and Karli VanDuinen 210. VanDuinen earned all-tournament honors with a total of 1,338 pins over six traditional matches for an average of 223.0.
A-State hosts its annual Mid-Winter Invitational Feb. 16-18 at Hijinx Family Entertainment Center in Jonesboro. Admission is FREE.
